GET VACCINATED OR GET FIRED!

Isn't it funny how you think you know someone, then they tell you something so foolish that your opinion of them is forever changed?
I'm not much for doctor visits, though they are necessary to stay reasonably well. Over the past several years, I've had to see more than my fair share. I was constantly around doctors most of my career in a professional capacity, which sometimes developed into a friendship. Until I retired, I would be considered very healthy, so doctor visits for my health were rare.
After I retired and moved back to Texas several years ago, I developed a great relationship with a PA at the local clinic. Unfortunately, I've had several non-life-threatening health issues, which meant I had to see someone. Even though she was a Physician's Assistant, I preferred to see her primarily because of her ability to ask the right questions to discover the root of my problem, whether it was my back, my hips, or gastrointestinal issues. I always enjoyed our visits and got to know her personally, as she did me. I found her brilliant and entertaining at the same time. She ensured I was cared for through routine tests and referrals to specialists when needed.
I learned yesterday that today would be her last day at the clinic because she was retiring. I texted her to wish her the best. She responded that she was quitting because Baylor Scott and White were forcing her to be vaccinated by September 1 or be fired. She further explained that it was her body, and no one would tell her to take an experimental vaccine!
I'm incredulous, but at the same time, I've reached an understanding of people who refuse to believe in science. Suppose you listen to sources long enough that spew falsehoods despite all the scientific evidence contrary to it. In that case, you begin to accept them as truth. I don't know where she missed that the vaccine had already been in the research phase years before COVID. Still, I do know that her view is what is being propagated on Fox News and various far-right websites. One can even go on YouTube to substantiate that view. I thought she read medical journals in the past, but now I know. She's been watching Fox News (or YouTube) and has been brainwashed like many lost souls in our country. 
Thank goodness that I have not seen her in over a year. Since September 1 is the date for all the employees to be vaccinated, I will wait until after that date before stepping into one of their clinics! Who knows how many people she's influenced with her misinformation? Hopefully, I won't need it, as the Delta variant runs rampant in our area with ICU beds full of ventilated patients. Based on current statistics, I will assume that most patients with COVID on vents, if not all, have yet to be vaccinated. One must wonder where she missed that her hospital is in a crisis mode with COVID patients.
It's a good thing today is her last day! Happy retirement!

MY LIFE WITH TERI FLANAGAN

  (Teri authored a story about me entitled "My Life with Dana Rushing" in the local newspaper after I moved from Horseshoe Bay to Austin. It was a total surprise and touched me beyond words. She is now in hospice at a facility in Marble Falls. Teri's husband has given me permission to publish this story. It will be in The Beacon this week.) ROSA PARKS AND THE DREAM

I dreamed of Rosa Parks last night.  She was sitting in a seat in the middle of a bus with Black men sitting on both sides of her.  I figured they were bodyguards and had joined her after news got out that this 'uppity Black woman' had dared to take her place amongst the Whites. The days of sitting in the back of the bus were over for her.  She worked long, hard days at low wages for a white family and had to take a bus every...damn...day.  Her great-grandparents had been slaves.  Enough was enough.   She felt she earned something more than a seat at the back of the bus.   She didn't know that this small act would set up a firestorm of millions of people being emboldened by her.  More and more people began speaking out, demonstrating, and even rioting to bring civil rights to the forefront.  The battle continued until, at last, civil rights passed.  Racism became somewhat more subtle over 50 years. But the Rosa Parks I saw in my dreams is still in that seat.
